We will finish our Armadillo Banners – please bring back your banner, if you took it with you this summer.  We have seven more that need to be started (& hopefully finished!).  We will order pizza for lunch.

Come help and be a part of the Austin TAEA Conference Planning Committee.

You are invited to a Painting Party!  Join the TAEA 2010 Conference Organizing Committee as we work on the backdrop for the general sessions stage.  We will meet at Travis High School in the artroom on July 27th from 10am -2pm or beyond for painting and a committee picture that will be in the conference catalogue!  It is especially important for chairpeople to attend this event and be in the photo!  If you have been helping, we need you there and if you want to get involved for the fall, we need you there!  Pizza will be provided for lunch.  As always, if you need more information give us a call or email.

Austin Hilton & Austin Convention Center

Summary / October 20, 2009 / Lamar MS / 6-8 pm

• Welcome / Conference Co-Chairs:  24 attendees from several districts.  Kristen began welcome as host and introduced Tim and Chris.  Food provided by Kristen.  Need to problem solve for additional meetings.

• Getting other art educators involved (Tim) — Facebook Fan Page, Blog page, Conference this year, Use Jr. VASE & VASE databases.  The group discussed this concept and it was decided Tim would build a blog page to be distributed to all central Texas art educators and information regarding planning, meeting etc… would be posted there for distribution of knowledge.  He will also build a fan page on Facebook.
  
• Vision for Conference — playing off “Keep Austin Weird” with “Keep Art Weird”
  (Kristen, Chris and Tim) The chairs reviewed the concept for conference and the group thought the theme was workable and creative.  It allows for a lot of different aspects.
  
• Fashion Show Parade (Kristen, Chris and Tim) Conference attendees will be asked to wear their “weird” (for auction or not) during the First General Session and have a parade down the isles to music (to be chosen).  Perhaps some kind of judging/prizes takes place during this time – membership voting?  Need to consider the logistics.  Perhaps put vote in box on way out and announce winners at Second General Session?

   

• Auction Item (Chris) — ideas so far are paintbrushes, form sets, frames (not frames – they are Dallas theme), weird wearable (jewelry or clothing — anything that adorns the body).  Others for consideration?  Wearable art was the preferred choice for the auction item and ideas about a runway show, parade during a general session or fashion show were discussed.

   

• Saturday Night Event (Tim) / Arthouse, AMOA, Mexic-Arte, Blanton, Women & Their Work  A museum crawl along the Congress Ave. corridor was discussed.  Tim is working on getting our local museums to commit for that Saturday night.  The organizing group was asked to think about an art project that could be created in sections at each venue to encourage people to visit all sites.  The Bob Bullock was also suggested to add to the list because they may be hosting a quilt exhibition during the conference window.  Additionally, Fred Woody suggested the new Visual Art Center at UT be part of the program.  This will be a main project for the Round Rock ISD group. Also Austin Children’s Museum because it will have a Carmen Lomas Garza exhibit during this time.  Perhaps it could be a separate tour.
  
• Friday Night Event was requested by some teachers – one teacher has access to large warehouse bar within walking distance of Convention Center & hotel.  We could have optional activity, Talent Show, at this location.  No cover, music, and cash bar.
  
• General Session Speaker Suggestions (Kristen, Chris and Tim)  The chairs put out the three speakers that they had discussed (Darryl Howard, David Bates and Sara Hickman) and opened the floor for suggestions of others for consideration.  Suggestions included: Eric Carle (author & illustrator), Romare Bearden (artist), John Yancey (cancelled from last conference because of death in his family), Alex Rubio / Vincent Valdez (San Antonio artists), Carmen Lomas Garza (artist) — she will have an exhibition at the Austin Children’s Museum during Conference 2010.  Her sister teaches in Del Valle ISD and a number of our faculty have contacts with the sister.

   

• Art N Soul (Tim) We are looking for organizations not only in Austin, but Williamson and hays counties for 2010.  Dell’s Children’s along with Austin Children’s Shelter.  Williamson County Children’s Shelter and CASA might be good choices.  Tim will check with the Dallas chair to see how many packets they receive for planning in 2010 as an estimate.

   

• Staff Art Show (Kristen) The Hideout is on Congress Ave. and can be used as a AISD art teacher is partial owner.  A 5×7 show or the like would be good for the space.  Fred Woody would like to help with this effort.  Only organizing committee members would be eligible to participate — could be part of the Saturday night event due to location. 

   

• Committees (Kristen)
   

Graphics — room signage etc…

Tours — will need tour guides. Ideas include Weird Art Tour (Liz Abrahams and Dottie), Duck Tour, Midnight Kayak Tour, Museum of the Strange (KellySchafer), Wimberly Glassworks. Austin Children’s Museum

Hospitality — multi-faceted / run  a booth with information about Austin and events, help with guest speakers, driving etc…, baskets for VIP, vendors etc…

Museum events — Tim + RRISD

Staff Art Show — coordinating work and requirements / hanging etc…

AV Facilitator — to be determined due to convention center offerings

Student Exhibit — panels from RRISD?  Tim to work on this effort.

Decorations — want something splashy — maybe weekend at a school to produce large backdrop — suggestions include rubbings from around Austin and images Photoshop and added to canvas for painting.

Bags — donations and stuffing.

Experience Institute — hands-on and speakers.  Texas Artist Series: Ideas include Sharon Smith, Dirty Art Car Guy, Lance Lescher, Women & Their Work, Armadillo Clay, Flatbed Press, Bill Meeks, John Yancy, etc…

Volunteers — this will come as we get closer.

Technology Group — lab? Chris Cooper is expert!  AISD also has an Art Technology Committee who is thinking about it and could provide workshops if we get a lab?  Dale Baker?

Break into groups for discussion / organization

Action items:  Chairs will meet to determine skit for closing session in Dallas as invite to Austin.  Tim will check on magnet save the date idea.  Kristen will work on Clay Bodies performance.  Chris has volunteered to help with design for magnets if that pans out.  Tim will arrange next meeting venue.  Announcement made using VASE and Jr. VASE lists plus district email.
